Are many watch brands hurting themselves by trying to create a monopoly of servicing their watches and making it difficult for independent watchmakers to get spare parts . I think the answer is yes . They are forgetting that it was independent watch makers and collectors that through watch sites like Time Zone , and Auction Houses like Antiquorum made their watches reputations . Today they have taken over many watch sites and stopped criticism of their watches . And of course the next step is to wipe out any competition in after sales service . The car industry have tried the same trick , it just does not work . And these watch brands have one really big problem . They can never meet the sevice needs of the watches they sell . There are just not enough watchmakers in this world . So in the future we could be waiting 6 months to get our Omega or Brietling etc etc back from the factory , Just like a Patek or AP etc etc today . Or we will see a whole new industry making unoriginal parts for all brands . Rolex are one of the few brands that have a dealer service network world wide . Omega have maybe the financial clout to do the same as Rolex in the future . But smaller brands just cannot do this . And i think that brands that have built their reputations on the backs of small watch makers , who have kept their old watches ticking should feel a little ashamed . What do you think ? Willy

First of all - I totally agree that the the service time of many of the expensive watch brands are totally insane.
With regard to the price of the service, I imagine - but am no as sure - that they largely overcharge.
I would as "user" hope that spareparts was available to all, but I will give the big brands, that:
They do not want someone who are not qualified, to give a watch a full service. Do not think that any watchmaker, can service anything as well as maybe the proffs sitting with the great brands.
To some extend it has to do with tools - and they are not inexpensive. If you want to be able to give full service to an Omega CoAxial, and AP, a GP or even a more simple thing (though many parts involved) a Zenith elPrimero - you will often need special tools and often even special oils (can be managed but still)
I do not think this is like - black or white. There are pros and contras, and I do NOT think is will reduce the sales for those brands in question.
I strongly feel that it would be wrong for e.g. Omega not to allow individual watchmakers/repairman to get acces to spareparts as they may exist from the periode before 1990 or whatever. That is not justified by wanting to ensure the repair process, but only to stop smaller watch shops from doing a service - but for the most expensive brands, it can make sense
By the way - why is this being such a new topic - It has been like that for years with Rolex- You can make "work-arounds" but they have reserved spareparts and service to themselves generally - and it has worked for them, has it not. They have not lost market, but added to the feeling of an exclusive watch

Hej Willy
