Hi Per,Good to hear from you again.Thats a tricky question.There are good
watchmakers like you,and there are bad watchmakers who could destroy
the finish on a high end watch.I have never believed that the polishing
or finish on a caliber has got much to do with how it functions.But i know
that many good watchmakers would not agree on this point.
                   I think that a reasonable finish,with no loose bits of metal
shavings in the caliber should be enough to make it function for a long
time.But has you know watchmaking is not just about the finish on a
caliber,it is in my opinion more important that the caliber works without
a lot of service cost,and time keeping problems.
                   i do not believe that any watchmaker without the proper
training could emulate the finish on say a Lange or many other high
end watches.Lets face it the guys who polish these watches do nothing
else everyday.And they are bloody good at it
And lets face it many so called high end brands like Patek use chemical 
polishing today on there bread and butter watches.I would go so far as
to say that only Lange and a few independent brands use the old methods
of hand finishing on every part of the caliber.But Joe Public believe the
rubbish many so called high end brands tell them about hand made calibers.
I think that most mechanical wristwatches today have not got much to do with
the old art of watchmaking.They have become a product of design and
computers without the personal touch.
PS.I would still pick a well finished caliber over an ordinary finished caliber
if they both functioned in the same way.I just like the personal touch.
