Lets face it these two watch brands build their watches for very different uses.
Suunto make excellent watches, and they sell a lot of watches. They are reliable
and easy to use.
But now we have to get real! Casio have for many years
used a lot of research and money,to make watches that have a toughness
few if any watches in the world can match.
Any quartz watch, can take a awful lot of punishment compared
to a mechanical watch.I have a 200kr.quartz Timex that has lasted me 25 years,and
it has taken a awful lot of punishment. But it could never take 200 meters of water
or a mud bath etc etc.
Suunto built their reputation by making watches for the fitness sector, and
you can visit any site world wide that sells sports equipment to see this. They
have specialised in this sector for many years. They make watches that are easy
to navigate and are very robust. They have to be tough for people who are using
them for extreme sports.
But here, any comparison with G-Shocks must stop.Casio who
are a huge company, selling millions of watches world wide, build their G-shocks
for a completely different public. And because of the specifications of GS watches,
they cannot build watches that are as easy to navigate as Suunto.Casio build
extreme watches that are purposely made to take anything you can throw
at them.Suunto do not do this!
If Suunto had to build a watch that could take the punishment
a GS can,it would need a different design. And i am sure it would not be so easy
to use as their current models.
Really we are talking about two very different brands here, that
are both very good at what they do.But to compare them on how tough they are
is ridiculous in my opinion.
As for military watches, today they buy hundreds of different brands
in hundreds of different countries.Price and average reliability is the measurement
used here.It is not like the old days, where we were issued with a Rolex Sub because
at that time, they were the toughest and most reliable watch you could get.
Today military personal use all kinds of watches. But the friends i have
in the English special forces tell me that the G-shock is the watch most of them
use.And i have read the same about USA special forces. Also most police forces
have the GS on the top of their list.
