I was reading this old post today , and again these people are making my blood boil . "http://omegaforums.net/threads/richemont-group-and-watchmakers.632/">http://omegaforums.net/threads/richemon ... akers.632/ .
Its like this . You take your brand new IWC - JLC - Omega - or any other watch made by these
two groups , to the dealer who sold it to you . The watch has a fault that any competent watch maker could fix the same day . But he cannot
because he cannot get the parts needed to fix the watch . And the dealer who sold you the watch as been told to send all watches with
factory faults back to the factory for repair . So you dear customer that have just paid a small fortune for your new toy . Will have to wait
a few months before you see it again . Fantastic service how do they do it ?
Next . You take your watch that is now 5 years of age in for a service . Same story you are again
forced to send your watch to the Swiss Alps for a few months . Unbelievable service ! Again how do they do it , or should i say get away
with it .
Answer . They get away with it because the people who sell us these watches , just happen
to forget to tell us about the fantastic service we can expect . And we watch nurds are not really doing much to protest about it . What
we need is a little forum were we can all tell our stories about our watch repair and service . Especially the after sales service we get when
buying a new watch . I hope our moderators can help with this ? We could call it the Service Forum .
Some will try to tell you that these delicate works of art that we decorate our wrists with , can only
be serviced by ultra super duper watchmakers sitting in their little studio atelier on a mountain top . This for the most a load of codswallop .
There are of course some High End watches that do need specialists to service them . But we are talking about a very little number of
watches in this category . Nearly all time and date watches can be serviced by a competent watchmaker . They will also tell you that
when you buy a luxury watch , it is just like buying a luxury car . The parts are more expensive , and training people to service your watch
costs money . Okay the parts may cost a little more , but the part about training is absolute Bullshit . Their are thousands of competent
watchmakers out there . But Swatch and Richemont are making it impossible for them to work on their watches . Because they refuse to
supply them with the parts they need .
Some will also try to tell you that Swatch and Richemont are just being smart or business minded
in a very competitive world . Yes its smart if they get away with it . I do not like their morality or methods . I think that when you make
a product you owe to the buyers to give a fair after sales service . And they are not doing that .
So what can they do to improve their service and gain the trust of the people who buy their product ?
I would suggest that a good start would be to pick some competent watchmakers around the world . Invite them to their factorys for
a course in special service needs for their watches . And then supply them with parts that enable them to service and carry out minor
repairs . And at the same time , do not demand that they rebuild their shops to resemble a Patek showroom , before being allowed to
touch these holy relics . They could also offer to loan a watch to the customer while they are waiting for their own watch to be repaired .
They could also for a small payment every month include all service and repairs for the lifetime of the watch . They could also learn about
humility .This is a cornerstone philosophy in the Mærsk Companys . Mærsk make a lot of money by servicing their customers in a
professional way .
But all of the above is just a dream . The shareholders of Swatch or Richemont do not give a
toss , for what a watch nurd like me writes . They will always care more about the yearly profit margins . And the only thing that would
ever make them listen , is the news that they are not selling so many watches . It will happen eventually if they keep up the good work
they are doing in alienating their customers . The other possibility is that the politicians in the EU will eventually get their act together
and put a stop to companys that practise these closed shop methods . This is the solution i believe will happen .
Lastly i will give you a little example of what can be done . Sinn are not a big brand , but they still sell
a good amount of watches world wide . Send your watch to them , and you will get it back within one month . If Sinn can do this , why
cannot brands with greater resources at their disposal do the same ?
