Zenith have a history and tradition in watchmaking that is unique . They have the distinction of having achieved over 1500 awards for their
contributions to watch making . I think this is the highest number achieved by any brand . Founded in 1865 and except for a little blip
during the Japanese quartz invasion , they have been making some of the best mechanical watches and introducing new ideas to
watchmaking .
In the year 1969 a legend was born . One of the greatest watch calibers ever the El Primero chronograph
the worlds first intergrated automatic 36000 vph . This was a revelation at that time and other brands were standing in line to try to get
Zenith to supply them with it . They had been suppling other swiss brands with calibers for many years , because they were a true
inhouse manufacturer of calibers . As far as i know they make over 18 different types of watch calibers . Rolex are just one of the
many brands that have used the El Primero caliber . Like Jaeger LeCoultre they have been the driving force behind many other
brands way to fame . And just like JLC they did it with discretion .
The Elite and El Primero calibers are made in so many forms and shapes i cannot list them here . Enough to say
many of them are absolutly beautiful to look at through a glass case back . Zenith have gone through some bad periods in the
last 40 years with the quartz problem , and a certain director called Theirry Natae . This man took Zenith into fields they did not belong
in , and he caused a lot of damage to the brand . A good tip , keep away from watches made in his period in charge .
Today Zenith have gone back to what they do best , making classic and some might say conservative
watches . They no longer supply as many brands with calibers , just a selected few are allowed to buy from them . They are a true
giant in the history of Swiss watchmaking . And i know they have a special place in the hearts of watch lovers everywhere .
