it would be intresting to hear what you all think about buying a Vintage watch compaired to a new watch, or as an addition to a new watch collection .
My own thoughts are .
On the + side
1. I think you get much much more real handwork in many vintage watches because they were of course made more by watchmakers than by machines .
2. You get a lot of watch for the money compaired to a new watch .
3. Thanks to many really good watchmakers who love to work on them . They are for the most easy and cheap to keep running .
4. It is fantastic to wear something that is a bit of history and often a work of art on your wrist .
5. The chance you will lose money on a vintage watch if you got it at a fair price is very rare
6. No matter where you travel in the world , you are almost certain to meet someone who shares your intrest and can start a conversation about what you are wearing on your wrist .
On the minus side . Depending of course how you look at it .
1. They tend to be more fragile than newer watches . And more care is needed for many Vintage watches if you intend to use them as a daily watch .
2. Original Bracelets and Straps can be especially hard to find .
3. Getting original parts for some watches can be a problem .
4. The small size of many watches could become a problem in the future . I think that watches under 36 mm will be hard to sell .
5. There are many fakes and unoriginal watches on the market . Do not buy without asking a independant specialist for an opinion .
6. They tend to be beautiful and discrete , this does not appeal to many modern people
Well i have mentioned no Brands or watches because there are so many on this site that know more about Vintage watches than i do . So i hope a few of them can give us a few tips on what to buy and a few basic rules for looking after them . Willy . PS. I am going on a fishing holiday from 11-2- to the 26-2 to Gambia and i will be looking for old watches
