The watch that I am going to write about today is the Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon "Alligator". It is a limited edition with 1000 pieces released in the end of 2005. My watch was brought brand new from my favourite AD just a few days ago. I was really amazed and surprised to see this watch still in display because this watch should had been sold out long time ago.

As quoted from the website of Ball,

"In the summer of 2004, Richard Limeburner took on another adventure to locate the Alligator , the first American submarine, lost for 141 years. This first U.S. Navy submarine was built by French scientists in 1861. Compared with the standards back then, Alligator was equipped with the most advanced features. Thus, its discovery will solve many puzzles regarding the state of military technology back more than a century ago. Throughout his whole journey, Richard has been accompanied by his Ball Watch Engineer Hydrocarbon."

As you can see, this is the reason why this limited edition of engineer hydrocarbon is called the Alligator.

Movement

The watch is powered by an automatic movement (Ball calibre 9018) and it has cold endurance down to - 40℃. However, I think this 9018 movement is actually the same as ETA-2836-2. Of course, Ball might have done some modifications on the ETA movement and then named her own calibre. The watch has been running for 5 days now and its performance is quite reasonable, gaining 4s to 6s a day. Performance like that is quite alright.

Dial, Hands & Bezel

The design of the dial is simple and easy to read. Date and day are displayed at 3 o'clock. Blue hour, minute and second hands are used in my watch. They look sharp and smart on the white dial background. Twenty eight micro gas tubes on hour, minute, second hands and dial are present for night reading capability.

The watch is water resistant up to 1000m (3300 ft) and this is marked clearly on the dial.

The Alligator is a diver watch and therefore its bezel is unidirectional rotating. A single micro gas tube is situated on the zero minute mark of the bezel to enhance night reading.

Case, Crown & Crystal

The case is made of stainless steel. It measures 42mm wide and 18mm thick. The watch is very heavy (about 270g in weight).

Helium gas escape valve is situated at about 10 o'clock of the watch. Up till today, the Alligator is the only Ball watches that has this feature.

The watch case is also antimagnetic up to 12000 A/m. According to Ball, antimagnetic is achieve by a special case design constructed with corrosion-resistant ferrite stainless steel materials and are specially equipped with a soft iron inner jacket consisting of a back plate, a ring surrounding the movement and the dial. This special alloy, reinforced by the shape of the inner case, prevents magnetic fields from penetrating as far as the movement and having an adverse effect on its accuracy.

Anti-reflective convex sapphire crystal is used.

Crown

The Allligator has a screw-in crown at 3 o'clock. It has a special crown protection. A protective plate is placed around the crown, which ensures the crown must have been screwed down to its original secure position after time adjustment. This special crown protection system also protects the crown and winding stem from damage due to shock. The watch is shock resistant up to 7500G.

Bracelet

The watch comes with two bracelets. In addition to the stainless steel bracelet, it also has a rubber diver bracelet. Also, a full set of bracelet setting tools is included.

The steel bracelet feels heavy and solid but it is very comfortable to wear.

Conclusion

The Ball Alligator is a excellent diver watch to have. The price is low and the quality is high. It has every feature of a deep sea diver watch. In order words, it is value for money.

Jeg er i hvert fald meget glad for mine Ball ure. Jeg synes, at kvaliteten er fremragende og set ud fra et ingeniørmæssigt synspunkt er der mange fede detaljer (anti-magnetisk, stødsikringen, tritium-tubes osv.). Bare ærgerligt at jeg aldrig får dem brugt. Tror ikke det har været ude af boksen siden UR-rally 2009 i Herning Icon_smil

Har du nogen sinde selv haft fingre i et? Var det dig, der engang havde et Ball Engineer Diver med grøn lynette?

Hmmm... 7500 G virker umiddelbart lidt vildt... Er der nogle der har lidt info om det tal, og evt. om nogle af de konstruktioner som Ball bruger til at stødsikre, især værkerne? Specielt ophæng f.eks?

Jeg vil dog mene at de kludrer lidt i forklaringen i ovenstående link, da ISO 1413 testen simulerer et fald fra 1 meter, ved at bruge en hammer monteret som et pendul som beskrevet her:

Det er jo i og for sig ligegyldigt hvor langt pendulhammeren i testen har tilbagelagt i meter før den rammer, så længe effekten svarer til en 3 kg hammer med hastigheden 4,43 m/s.

Men så vidt jeg kan udlede svarer et fald fra kun en meters højde ned på en hård overflade altså til ~ 5000 g Icon_question Icon_question Icon_question Icon_e_surprised

Nu har jeg prøvet selv at trække 8 g og det virker noget mere voldsomt end at falde ned fra en meters højde <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->
