Inspired by someone on this site who said , that many cheap watches keep just as good time as high end watches . And that a caliber finished to the highest standards the watch industry as to offer , does not necessary keep better time than many poorly finished calibers .
I agree with everything he said , so why do we put these high end brands on a pedestal and look up to them ? I mean why waste money if all you need a watch for is to tell the time . One CT machine is just like another , and can cut out a watch case with the same precision for a cheap watch or high end watch . All basic caliber parts are cut out or stamped out in the same way , high or middle or low end .
ETA are a huge caliber maker and have years of experience and technical know how behind them . Indeed most watch brands could never even begin to make calibers that could compete with ETA . They have built some of the most reliable and most used calibers in the world . And their calibers are cheap for what you get , and easy to service .
I think some watch collectors and enthusiasts want more than a watch spat out of a machine or put together on an assembly line . And they are willing to pay for it .
The tradition of the caliber makers has existed for a hundred years or more . Firms like JLC , Zenith etc etc supplied basic calibers to other brands , who modified them and finished them to a very high standard . JLC suppllied Patek and AP with basic calibers for many years . But the workmanship in a finished Patek or AP caliber was far better than JLC could achieve with their own calibers . A Patek or AP watch was much more expensive and ultimatly became more collectable because of the work put into it , than a JLC watch with the same caliber .
The finishing ie. polishing of cases bracelets on many watches is exceptional and requires the skill and feel of a human hand . The best example i can give for this is the AP . Royal Oak . The complicated way this watch case and bracelet is polished is still a wonderfull sight that calls for admiration of the human skill involved . A few middle class and most high end brands finish their watch cases and bracelets by hand .
Today even in so called middle of the range watches there is a big difference in the finishing work put into them . And there are a awfull lot of brands out there telling lies about the finish and handwork put into their watches . They might fool the public , but they will never fool the experts . And in the future many of them will only be worth the weight of the metal used to make them .
I want some soul in my watches . I want some human skill and feeling put into them . I know all of this is going to cost me a lot of money . And i am going to be cheated a bit along the line . And it might not be as accurate as a cheaper watch
But it will have some soul . Willy
