Tool is a term used to describe a watch it is also the name of maybe the greatest rock band on the planet.I think this term is hard to define because there are just so many watches in the world you just cannot put them all in a category.Dressdiver is another term used to describe certain watches this one is easier to define in my opinion.I will try to give you my idea of what a Toolwatch is for me .And how i descibe a Dressdiver.
A tool watch for me is a tough watch that i can take fishing -running-woodcutting-gardening-golfing etc etc.And i am not worried about how many hacks or scatches it gets. But remember i am a watch freak. So many watches that ordinary people use as tool watches are no good for me because i want to sell them again,so hacks and scatches are not good for me.But in my opinion a Tool watch should have a tough caliber and a simple not highly polished case.It should be easy to read, also at night.Waterproof shockproof and cheap to sevice.A tool watch is not a work of art and i will not pay a fortune for something i will treat just like a srewdriver or spade. And last but not least it should keep fair time and not look to out of place on my wrist.
There are Divers and there are Dress Divers in my opinion.I have known and worked with many prof Divers.I am myself not a diver.Nearly all Prof Divers today use a dive computer and maybe a mechanical watch as back up in case the computer fails. We have also hobby divers and they usually follow the prof divers and use the same security systems but maybe to a lesser degree.several things are very very important in a dive watch .One it must be reliable and have a tough caliber that can take shocks. Two you must be able to read it easily in the water.A dive bezel is also a must and a secure bracelet or strap.
What a diver does not need is a watch that costs him 20-30000kr extra for a caliber or case polish. He does not need a watch from a Brand who have no real tradition or tested reliability in making dive watches. He does not need a watch that has not been tested under the most extreme conditions you can give a dive watch. His or hers life might one day depend on the watch they wear. There are not as many brands as you maybe think that can or do build watches that fit the bill.Rolex who have always been a favorite of prof divers is one brand Seiko are another.Their watches are tested and developed working together with diving companys. There are other brands of course who make just as good or maybe better dive watches. But building watches is a buisness and you have to cater to public taste. And the general public want watches that are functional and look good at the same time.So many brands today use more money on polishing and marketing than they do on the development of their watches. So really it is up to the individual to find the difference between marketing hype and reality. In my opinion 98% of all divers made today can be called dress divers.
