A lot of people on this site,have a great amount of knowledge on how to look after our watches. I hope you all will share it with us all. And if you read any good tips on
the net, please post it here. I will start off with telling you how i look after my watches.

The first thing i do when getting a watch used or new is to clean it. I do this by giving it a wash in a mild mixture of washing up liquid and water. I then rinse it with lukewarm water and leave it to dry for a few hours.

Then i polish the watch with a chrome cleaner, putting it lightly on the watch without rubbing hard. Leave it to dry for about one hour, and clean off with a soft cotton
cloth. Next i use a USA car sealant product i buy from FDM called Ultra Glozz. I use a soft cloth and without rubbing, i put a layer on the case and the glass. I leave it to dry for 1 hour, and you can clean it off with a cloth, and using a soft small paint brush to get into the places the cloth cannot.

You can do this with coated sapphire or plastic, it does not harm it at all. It will also stop your watch getting those horrible finger marks and smudges on the case and glass.

This treatment lasts for about one year, and it protects your watch just like it protects a car. And you will not get so many hairline scratches on your watch. Treat the watch bracelet in the same way. 

PS. AR coatings on the crystal tend to be a magnet for finger print marks, using a sealant does not harm the coating, and you will not get the marks on your glass.

Why most people do not look after their watch straps is a mystery for me.
Many times i have bought a used watch,and the expensive strap is filthy
and worn,and needs changing.Totally unnecessary in my opinion.A well looked
after strap can last just as long as a steel bracelet,if you treat it in the right way.

                        People sweat,and the elements can destroy a leather or rubber
strap in a few years.It is very easy to prevent this,and always have a good 
looking strap on your watch,by just doing a few simple things to your strap
two times a year.

                      First clean the strap with a leather cleaner used for furniture
easily purchased in many shops or on the net.
               Then treat the leather with a good neutral leather cream,this will
keep the original colour of your strap.Be careful not to use products that
contain to many chemicals ,these can destroy the stitching on the strap.

                  I treat my rubber straps with silicone first,to keep them supple.
Then when the strap is dry i use a Vinyl make up sprayed onto a soft cloth.
This brings back the colour of the strap.

                I have watch straps that are over twenty years old that look almost
new.So a little care is well worth the effort,and it will also make it easier to
sell your watch again with the original strap still on it.

I usually only wash the watch softly and same goes for the straps, without all the after treatment. That will change now.
