I include myself in this category, even though i am not a collector as such. I was inspired by a mention of the IWC 3536 Aquatimer in another thread. Let me tell you about this watch, that i consider to be maybe the greatest dive watch ever made by the Swiss or Japanese brands in this world. Consider this. We have a dive watch that was made to reach depths of 2000 meters, far more than any Rolex submariners or dwellers of the time. And it did it without a helium valve! The engineering of the case of this watch was so far ahead of anything other brands were doing, that it was almost ridiculous. Inside the watch was a ETA caliber that came to IWC in pieces, then it was modified and finished to such an extent that IWC rightly called it in house. The same thing AP-Patek-VC were doing with their not inhouse calibers. It was better finished than any Rolex caliber and just as robust and accurate.
You might ask yourself, why is it that a Rolex Sub a vastly inferior dive watch costs more than the double of the 3536 today? There is just no logic in the minds of most of the watch buying public
The bracelet on this watch also held the title of the worlds best for many many years, and i include all high end brands here. The only flaw i found on the bracelet was the lack of micro adjustment. This watch was made when IWC were making some of the greatest quality wristwatches you could buy, and they were a serious competitor to Rolex at this time in history. I would say to anyone, just take this watch in your hands. The quality of it will give you a feeling of near perfection few watches can match. It is in my mind a great injustice that the IWC 3536 does not cost more than any Rolex dive watch ever made in todays collector market.
