Rolex verses a Sinn
#1
This is a unfair comparison. The Rolex Explorer 216570 costs ca.48.000 kr.And the Sinn 857 costs ca.15.000kr.You might think this, but in my opinion the Sinn is in some ways a better watch.Take note that i said in some ways.Let me try to compair the two watches with what i think are the good and bad points about them.I own both these watches at the present time.

1.The case of the Rolex is made of 904L steel that is exclusive to them. This type of steel enables Rolex to finish thier cases with a very high shine.Nobody in the industry would contradict you,if you said their case work was maybe the best you can get anywhere. The great disavantage with this type of finish is that it shows scratches and dents, and is in someways not suitable for the use that is intended for the watch. It was okay years ago when we did not have the know how or possibility to use the technology in metals that we have today.Depth rating 100m

2.The case of the Sinn is made using their own Tegmentation process. This makes the case much more resistent to knocks and scatches. In fact after 5 years of daily wear there is not a scratch or mark on the case of this Sinn. The workmanship of the case is superb, but it is not so detailed as the Rolex case. This is a dull grey case, that is more designed for practical use, than to be a object of admiration.Depth rating 200m

Here i think you have to make a choice between beautifull work,or practical use.And of course it depends on what you intend to use the watch for.

3. Inside the Rolex is the inhouse caliber 3187 with, parachrom bleu hairspring that gives a certain amount of anti magnetic protection. This is a tried and tested caliber, and nobody makes stronger calibers than Rolex. But service costs are high, for what is really a simple time and date caliber.Rolex tell you how they improve their calibers to make them service friendly. But they are not friendly for you,but friendly for Rolex.

4.Sinn have put a high grade ETA 2893-2 in their watch.A tried and trusted caliber that sits in millions of other watches. It has a very good finish, and is cheap to service. So not in the class of the Rolex in many ways. But still a reliable work horse.

Well i think you get what you pay for here, and i hope that Sinn one day will make their own calibers.

5.The Rolex comes on the solid tropic link bracelet, and once again perfect finish.Unfortunately like the case it is a scatch and dent magnet.

6.The Sinn gives you several choices.Sillicone with non tegiment or tegimant butterfly clasp.Or leather pin buckle strap. And you can order with a tegiment or non tegiment bracelet in the same dull grey colour as the case.

Again the Rolex is better to look at.But the Sinn gives you more choice, and practical use.

7.The GMT function on the Rolex is superb and easy to use.The dial is easy to read and the lume is good and lasts for a long time.Winding and setting the date is a piece of cake.Everything about the functions of this watch is just so smooth.Top marks to Rolex here.

8.The GMT on this Sinn is a bit hacky, but it works ok.Setting the time and date is easy and smooth. And the screw in crown is in my opinion better than the one on the Rolex. The dial is more Pilot Watch design, and very easy to read. But the lume on this 5 year old watch does not last as long as the Rolex lume.I intend to ask Sinn about this.

Rolex take absolute top marks here.Sinn still have a long way to go in the dial department. But other aspects compare very well to Rolex.

9.New ideas.Rolex have improved the caliber and the case and bracelets on their new watches. But that is about it.Their is really nothing left of the tool watch image on which they built their world wide reputation. The tropic link bracelet and the improvments to the calibers are really not worth mentioning i this aspect.

10.Sinn have packed their watch with a 200 m depth rating,low pressure resistent crystal,antimagnetic to 80.000 A/M,shock resist to DIN8309,anti reflect both sides of crystal,dehumidifying system,Tegiment treated case.And a 3 year warranty.And screw fastened bezel.

Sinn win hands down here.If we look at only the specifications of the two watches.

My own personall opinion is this. The Rolex is still in a class above the Sinn in terms of finish and sophistication. It is more beautifull to look at,and can be used for dress or everyday use.

The Sinn is a Tool in every sense of the word.It has not just been made to appeal to a certain type of public. There is just so much practibility built into this watch. It is definitely not meant to be beautifull to look at.But it is made to be used as a daily watch, that can take a lot of punishment and still look good.

If i had compaired the Rolex to Sinn watches in the price range over 20.000 kr.Then the Sinns would win easily in the Tool Watch department. So i think this is a fair comparison i have made in some ways between these two watches. I still like Rolex, and i still think you get a lot for your money compaired to other watches in their price class,if you buy them used! They have a fantastic history, and are in many ways the most important mechanical watch makers i the watch world.Indeed during the Japanese Quartz crisis it was Rolex money that kept many Swiss brands alive.

But when i look at this Sinn 857,it just makes me want to get another Sinn. And i am saying goodbye to my Rolex Explorer, because in my opinion Sinn now make the type of watches i wish to wear for daily use.

Super gennemgang, Rodney! Kun billeder mangler for at få top karakter :-)

Icon_Up

Thank you Frederik. There are so many reviews and pictures on the net Icon_smil No doubt what so ever in my mind about the strength of any Rolex.I think a lot depends on what you want the watch to do for you,if you know what i mean.I think a Sinn could be a good supplement to any Rolex owner.

I can only agree Thomas, owning one does not rule out the other.A Rolex is still a dream for many people, and nobody can doubt the quality built into every one of the watches they make. And at the same time i admire Sinns approach to making strong everyday watches.

Men rigtig fin sammenligning!
