This is without a doubt,one of the hårdest choices i have had to make,because i was forced to leave out many other great dive watches.I have tried to combine technical advance with widespread or professional use.The watches i list here,have just a short description from me,because others have written everything you need to know about them.But i will explain why i rate them in their order of merit.
1. A very easy choice compared to the other watches Rolex Submariner.
This watch is a legend,and without a doubt the most well known dive watch ever made.Introduced in the fiftys,this Watch as been used by professionals and ordinary people ever since.Enough has been written about this watch,so i will not bore you with more of it.A criticism of it could be that Rolex have not really developed the Sub,and compaired to other mechanical dive watches it seems a bit out of date.
2. This may supprise many of you.But a bit of googling could change that. The Seiko Pro Diver Automatic born in 1968.
Used all through the Far East and Australia by pro and hobby divers,and in the rest of the western world.This watch in all its different forms,is most probably the worlds most popular conventional dive watch ever.And because of its lower price,more popular than the Rolex Sub with most divers.It would be number one on my list,but Seiko have changed the specifications and look of this watch so much over the years,that many would dispute this.The DNA of this watch is still found today in the present Seiko Prospex dive watches.And one interesting fact the 600m Automatic version was the worlds first production titanium watch with no less than 20 patents on it.A criticism of the Pro Diver could be that it came after the Rolex Sub,and used a few elements from it.But not much in my opinion.And anyway who did not copy Rolex,or should i say who did Rolex copy? Criticism not much really considering the Price.
The next three watches could not be rated on popularity,only on technical prowes with professional use.
3. It must be the IWC Ocean 2000m in this position for me.
It was a technical advancement on any dive watch ever made,and a forerunner for one of the best series of technicaly advanced dive watches ever seen.With a unheard of 2000m depth rating without the use of a helium valve,it became a hit with pro military divers and watch nerds.One version was completly anti magnetic,and used by the German frogman units for mine clearing.This version is most probably the most expensive dive watch ever made,when you look at the time and problems the development took before IWC and the German defence ministry had a working watch.The whole caliber had to be anti magnetic,not a easy feat at this time.From the titanium Ocean came the 3536 gst Aquatimers in all their forms.And of course the legend called the Deep One.This was the first dive watch in the world with a depth measure built into it.IWC used a old invention called the Bourden tube,and built it into the watch.Only 1000 were ever made and it was not a commercial success,because of the low depth rating of 100 meter.These IWC dive watches are in my opinion Unique,because they were and are still today more advanced than most of the mechanical dive watches out there.Criticism,i would say IWC should have done more work on the lume.
4.This was a close call but i have to give this spot to the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms.
My reason for giving this watch the nod over the last watch on my list is quite simply,that it is a serie built watch that has sold in greater numbers over the years.Developed by the French navy and Blancpain in 1953,there is dispute on who came first the Rolex Sub or the Fifty Fathoms.This was a true military dive watch used by navy forces all over the world.So when you see this watch today,do not let its good looks fool you,this is a very serious dive watch with history that is second to none.Much as been written about it,so i will let you google all the facts about it.Criticism? Not really a Tool Watch anymore,but i could say the same about the Sub.In my opinion the most beautifull dive watch ever made.
5. The Omega Ploprof old and new versions.
It is unusual to be able to name the same watch in two versions as an icon.But in the case of the Ploprof,i think it is justified.Developed in conjunction with Comex and Cousteau,this watch is unique,and i will tell you why.It is probably the only dive watch ever built,that did not take into account future sales to the public.This monster watch was made by Omega as a pure diving tool,for professional divers,and nothing else was considered.A interesting fact is that the Rolex Deep Sea,that many Rolex lovers swoon over,has copied maybe its most important detail from this watch.You can Google this quite easily.The Ploprof is unlike any other diver in the world.And Omega released a new version of it,that could be in a close race with anything,for being maybe the best new version of a older model ever made.This watch is just a piece of tool art.Just touch it and feel it with you fingers,you will be impressed.Some might say it is ugly,but i and thousands of others would say it is just a beautifully made watch.I love it.
Many of you will disagree with this list i am sure.If you do please give your reasons for watches you would put on this list.And please do not just put your favorite divers on the list.It gives no meaning.The watch must be a icon of the dive watch world.I hope i do not kick myself for forgetting a watch
