A Tale Of Three Watches

Magnatism can in the future play a big part in the time keeping accuracy of our watches . We are surrounded by electrical devices today , that contain magnets . A few watch brands have specialized in making watches that combat this problem . I wish to concentrate on three of these brands . Rolex - IWC - Omega .

The IWC Ingenieur was the first mass produced watch to deal with this problem . IWC used a cast iron cage , called the Faraday cage to encase the movement and protect against magnetic fields . The watch was a success with engineers and scientists who worked in enviroments with strong magnetic fields . It protected against magnetism up to 1000 gaus .

The Rolex Milgauss came into production in ca. 1958 , and offered the same protection as the IWC . Rolex also used the Faraday cage for protection against magnetic fields . This watch was not a big selling watch by Rolex standards , and explains why these early Milgauss models cost a fortune today .

The Omega Aqua Terra 15000 gaus is the new boy on the block , and in terms of efficiency it beats the Rolex and IWC watches easily by being anti magnetic to a huge 15000 Gaus . And it does it without using a protective cage . Omega decided to make the movement anti magnetic , and at the same time made the Rolex and IWC completly out of date . To be fair IWC were the first to make a completly anti magnetic caliber in their Ocean watches for the German military dive unit .

But looking at these three watches today they are still very unique in their perspective ways , and very much alike . All three are great do anything watches , you can swim with them and use them as dress watches at the same time . They are to put it shortly , great all round do anything watches . And with the added bonus of being anti magnetic .

Which one to chose ? Depends on what you are looking for . The Rolex Milgauss as got the history is a great looking watch with inhouse caliber , and will hold a good used price . The IWC Ingenieur also great looking , and maybe with the best bracelet in the watch trade . Its drawback is that it comes with a standard bog Sellita caliber , and that gives it minus points in my book . The Omega Aqua Terra is missing the history but beats or equals the Rolex and IWC in every other way . All three just look classical , and i honestly cannot say one looks better than the other in my eyes.

Hats off to Omega here for taking watchmaking a step further . By making the Faraday Cage obsolete they have given a lession to Rolex and IWC about how to push watchmaking into a new era . Omega intend to make all of their watches antimagnetic in the future . And once again we see Rolex and IWC sitting on their butts , selling history and not contributing much in new technology . In fact IWC have taken a step backward in my opinion with the calibers they are offering in a watch in this price class

Just like to add that there are other antimagnetic watches out there , but most of them use the Faraday cage for protection .

Igen, igen, igen meget velskrevet indlæg, med mange aspekter og overvejelser, som alt sammen bliver rundet flot af. Er enige i det fede ved anti magnestiske ure er at de går til ALT. Også kunne jeg heller ikke være mere enig i at Omega, bare er mange skridt foran mange af de andre ur mærker for tiden. Hvorimod IWC ikke laver meget andet end re-editions, limited editions osv... Icon_e_biggrin

Er problemet med magnetisme ikke koncentreret omkring balance,spiral, anker og ganghjul ? Er det derfor Moser producerer de vitale dele i guld ?

Men hvor aktuelt er problemet med magnetisme?
Er det noget vi alle skal frygte, og er der specielle hensyn at tage, når man bærer et "almindeligt" ur?

Ja, et problem for urnørdter som vist stort set er de eneste som går med mekaniske ure i dag.
Og, tak for Willy for en aktuel og interessant tråd !

Jeg er meget forsigtig at udsætte mit ur for magnetisme. Jeg tager uret altid af (stort set den eneste situation) når jeg skal justere eller flytte højtalere, kommer tæt på elektriske motorer etc. Og alligevel, når jeg bringer mine mekaniske brugsklokker til antimagnetisering hos Henrik (Rolex AD´ens gode og venlige urmager i Herning) ca. to gange om året, ER urene altid mere eller mindre magnetiserede.
Jeg er ret så dus med mine ur og hver gang jeg synes at uret taber mere end det plejer, tager det til antimagnetisering hos urmageren og vupti... i hvert fald indtil videre, uret går igen som det skal.
Summa summarum: Magnetisme ER et reelt problem (men nem at fikse).

Jeg har også haft et helt aktuelt problem med magnetisme. Jeg har et metal-skilt med mit navn, som man sætter fast på tøjet med en magnet på bagsiden. Og det skilt kom på et tidspunkt i samme lomme som mit lomme-ur. Hvorefter uret vandt adskillige minutter i timen. Problemet var dog ikke større end at den gode Bo Mølbak afmagnetiserede det igen.

Jeg kom også en overgang på CERN, og der er flere steder, hvor det med store bogstaver står, at der er kraftige magnetfelter. Og dernede skal det tages helt seriøst.

Nu kommer de færreste jo nok på CERN, men jeg tror som John givet, at mange kan risikere at komme i nærheden af magneter.

Lad os antage ens ur kommer forbi en magnet, og det begynder at miste adskillige minutter - er det så bare en antimagnetisering, også er det, det ? Icon_e_biggrin
