I understand what you are saying, but you need to be realistic. You have traveled as I have, and have met many people and religions. Just take Muslims - orthodox Catholics or orthodox Jews - or Indian Hindus - To them religion is so special, that it makes no sense to say you respect the man but not his religion. They will find you living a godless life with no respect for anything spiritual, but only for money and yourself (and I am not saying they are right, just that they will look at you that way)
To get peace and understanding you need to respect even their religion. You do not need to respect the violent part or the fundamentalists within each religion, Muslims calling down death for all woman who show their hair and sing – or the pope being against condoms, even if it could help fight HIV in Africa – but basically – religion is something you have to embrace with respect, in order to make any sense what so ever, to you saying I respect all people.

It is such an integrated part of probably 50-60% of all people of the world, so telling them you do not respect their religion, would not make sense – if you really mean you respect all people.
Otherwise you will have to say: I respect about 40% of all people at maximum, for thinking much like I do, and the rest I disrespect

I do not see myself as a religious person by the way. I have without problem answered the question - DO you believe in God - from e.g. people in Bangladesh who had to leave a meeting to join the Friday prayer. My answer has been – I am not as believing as you are, but I am sure, if there is a god, there is only one universal god, no matter what name he is given. No little girl in Rome will go to hell for believing in the same god as the pope, and no little boy on Greenland will go to hell for not ever praying to God. God – whoever he is, is not so interested in himself or his reputation, and will embrase, if they have been good – and the 10 commandments as we know them in Denmark, will probably cover them, – no matter what the name of the God should be.
Those I have talked to, and that is quite many respect that, but if I tell them I am an atheist, then that is not good in their ears. It is all about RESPECT in the positive meaning of that misused word.

Sorry for the much too long answer Icon_e_biggrin br

Jeg er hverken jøde, medlem af folkekirken eller FaceBook – men jeg ELSKER julen ;-}
Mest af alt fordi, jeg i dén grad skal præstere i den måske eneste disciplin jeg for alvor er skrap til – spise (-;

god jul

I will give you a short answer John . The biggest problem we have in this world is intolerance . I think religion puts a limit on your intelligence and tolerance for others . What people do or believe is up to them , i do not care one way or the other .

The problem is with many of these people is that they cannot stop preaching to other people or their own children . I think the Pope is a criminal in the class of Hitler or Stalin and all priests make me sick to the stomach , with their fairy stories that are designed to entrap people .
So imagine if i was a famous person having just written this . I would have to go into hiding to protect my family .

So you see John i cannot and will not respect any religion but i will respect the right of all people to practise it.
I have many Muslim freinds , they know exactly what i believe and respect it . And if they did not because of their religion , then i guess they would not be my friends .

As people become better educated religion will i hope have a quiet death <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> Willy

- John

Idé til julelæsning: Christopher Hitchens: "God is not Great", også oversat til dansk.
