Icon_e_biggrin1
Lot of truth there Jacob. But to many have latched on to the idea of getting around
the copy laws,by just putting a different name on the dial and using the word homage.
I would call a real homage watch, one that is made by the original brand.Otherwise
i would call it a copy.I can understand people who cannot afford the real thing being
tempted by these watches. They are not always cheap, these so called homage watches,
and in my opinion they are terrible value for money, and hard to sell again.I also
think that many of these micro brands will disappear in the future leaving many
buyers with problems with repairs, and owning something with no lasting value.
There are just thousands of these brands around today,if you could call them brands.
They just design a case and put a bog standard caliber in it,and most of the money
used is in the marketing department. But there is a twist to the story, and one that
many of the established Swiss brands are responsible for.IWC-Breitling-Omega
etc etc, have for years been selling watches with bog standard calibers for ridiculous
prices to a unsuspecting watch public. So who can blame the micro brands for
copying them. The only thing i truly believe about the watch industry is that
it is becoming harder and harder to find anything that is original anymore.
I can understand that it is impossible for a new brand to produce a in house caliber.
But they could at least try to improve the standard calibers, and put a bit
of watchmaking back into the watch. They do not have to go to the extremes
of your coming Dornbluth, but every bit would help to give the watch a bit of
credibility in my eyes. The swiss watch industry is falling asleep again in my
opinion, just like they did before the Quartz crisis. They are getting boring, and
the only thing they can come up with is limited editions of the same watch
with a different dial, that some people will pay a premium for.Omega is your
classic example of how to flog a dead horse to death, with the Speedmaster
watches. Why they cannot come up with something different is beyond me.
They should take a look at Seiko, who make so many different models
and with prices that range from 1.000 kr to over 500,000kr.The Swiss
are standing still, and are just coming up with the same models again and
again. Some would say that it is like the Porsche 911,and why change a
winning formula. But history has proved that any industry that stands still
will eventually die.And who knows maybe micro brands and homage brands
will help to send them on the way.
