Servicing watches is fast becoming a problem for the watch industry. In recent years millions of mechanical wristwatches have been sold,to a unsuspecting public who were not aware of the problems this could give them.Brands just pumped out watches with no responsibility over for the people who bought their products.
Today watch sites all over the world are getting swamped with stories about bad and slow service of watches. So we can ask what went wrong? Most other industrys have realised that servicing products,is a very important part of their image and reputation, with the buyers of their products. But the watch industry seems to go in a opposite direction. Is it because manufactures of luxury products, fly under the political rader?Or is it because the users of these products, are not organised into a body, that could put some weight behind their complaints?I do not know, but i would like to hear the views of our readers about this.
Consider this,we are short of watchmakers compaired to the amount of mechanical wristwatches being made today. So what have many watch brands done?Well believe it or not, they have made it difficult or nearly impossible for independent watchmakers to get the parts they need to fix our watches. They use the argument that they, and only they ,can carry out the service of their watches in a satisfactory way.The truth is that they want to earn more money,by sevicing their own products.Nothing wrong with that, you say, thats good business sense.I could agree,if i did not have to wait 4-6 months before i saw my watch again, and had to pay maybe 100% more than my local watchmaker could do the job for.
I personally cannot find any excuse what so ever, for this type of shamefull service to a customer who has paid thousands of kroner for a product. You might try to tell me that, that special products need special attention.I say you are talking out of the back of your head. And i would suggest you try to learn how long it takes to service even the most complicated watch.I can tell you it does not take a month or a week,we are down to much less than this.No the real problem is capacity. And the fact that they keep making more watches, and that they do not have the watchmakers to service them. But instead of helping their customers, they put greater priority on earning more money from them.
What can we do about it,you might ask?I made this decision a couple of years ago.I will never again buy watches from brands, where i know their parts cannot be scourced by my local watchmaker.I simply refuse to let these people hold me over a barrel.I know we have discussed this problem before, but in my opinion it cannot be discussed enough. And last but not least. If a relatively small brand like Nomos can supply parts to any watchmaker. Then why do other brands not think about their customers, like Nomos.
PS. I am not even sure that what they are doing is legal.Maybe others have comments about this?
