Is there such a thing as the perfect watch?Well i think it depends how you look at the question.A watch could be perfect for you,but imperfect for others.
I have owned many watches,to many to count.From Lange-PP-to seiko-timex-casio-etc etc.All types and all sizes,divers-dress-pilot-etc etc.And if someone asked me to name the best of them all,it would be very difficult.Watches are a lot like cars,you would not buy a Ferrari for driving around fields.And i doubt you would buy a Lange for extreme sports.But if i was forced to pick one watch out of everthing that i have owned up to now,then the choice is quite easy.
It is not the most beautiful watch i have owned,indeed i thought it ugly the first time i saw it.But it grew on me,and i have owned three of them.The most recent was a chreme dial model,that is quite rare.The watch in question is of course the Rolex Explorer1 16570.I will not go into the history of this watch,because others have done this hundreds of times before me.And really there is nothing to add.
In many ways a simple watch with a GMT complication,that was developed by Rolex for extreme use.There is no weak spot on this watch at all.The case is 40mm with a fixed bezel,waterproof to 100m.The bezel is stainless steel with no weak spots like a Sub or Dweller.The caliber is bomb proof,and made for very hard use.The bracelet has been criticised in the past,and quite frankly Omega bracelets have been better made.But i have never heard of a older Rolex bracelet that let anyone down.And lest we forget,the bracelet is very very comfortable to wear.It doubles as a dress watch,and a go anywhere do anything watch.You do not have to worry about scatches or dings on this watch,because it will still look good,and with more character.It fits under a shirt cuff,and is a discrete watch with unmistakable Rolex dna.
Now at 40mm it will not look out of place on many wrists.But that is up to individual preference of course.This watch grew on me like a fungus.And it could be the last watch i ever own.I have owned the new 42 mm Explorer,that is in many ways a better built watch.But for me the older model is the best.I think it is the most complete Tool watch ever made,and i personally can find no weakness in it.
