Polishing and modern finishing on new watches

Is it just me that feels that modern so called Tool or everyday watches are just to shiny and overdone?If for example you compare a older Rolex with a new model, the difference is striking.I personally do not like highly polished case sides or center links in a watch that is meant to take punishment.If you look at a older model Sub or Explorer,these watches could still look good even with scratches and dings.Many modern models look like hell on a strap,because the polishing high lights every mark on the watch.I know that watch brands have to cater to public taste.But are they also catering to their own service centers that polish their watches? You have to look hard to see minor scratches on many old watches ,but the scratches on newer watches jump right into your face.Bling is ok on a desk diver or dress watch,but please not on one that is meant to climb mountains or dive in the sea.What do you think?
