I like and respect both brands . Rolex are a very conservative brand , who make very high quality simple watches . However it must be said that apart from the oyster case they have contributed very little to the art of watchmaking .
Omega are quite the reverse of Rolex , and have contributed many new ideas to the noble art of watchmaking . And in that respect they leave Rolex standing , almost at the start line .
Rolex and Patek because of their expertise in the art of branding have attained a unique position , in the swiss watch industry . But no one in their right minds can say it is because they both make the best watches . Both brands are guilty of buying
their own watches at auctions and in this way pumping up the prices for their used watches. And this marketing strategy worked perfectly in creating the myth amongst the general public that both brands have .
Some including me would argue that the calibers in Rolex watches are the most reliable mechanical calibers you find . But it is easier to make old ideas work better , than trying to invent something new . And that sums up the difference between Rolex and Omega for me .
This argument about these two great brands as been raging for years , and i think it is about time people woke up to the fact that watches must be judged on merit and not on branding .
Next question . Will brands like Rolex and Patek continue to hold their positions in the watch buyers eyes ? Nothing is unattainable in this respect , and Patek are a good example . According to a survey i read about a couple of years ago in the good old USA , Lange & sohne have overtaken Patek as the most prestigious watch brand in the large business companys . Branding is a strange thing , just imagine Omega starting to use the enormous resources of the swatch group in a sustained effort to unseat Rolex .
No one can predict the future , just never say never .
