Lets face it . If you want a Watch built by a watchmaker today , be prepaired to pay a small fortune to buy it . Watches that cost 100-150.000 dkr are really nothing special at all . To buy a special watch where a skilled watchmaker has assembled and polished all of the caliber will cost you over 200.000 dkr. AP- Patek - JLC etc etc all use Chemical polishing of their Watch calibers today to save time and Money . Lange & Sohne do not 
Watchmakers cost a lot of Money and there is a shortage of them in the Swiss Watch industry . Chemical polishing is where a part of the caliber is dipped in a bath of special Chemical that leaves a highly polished sheen on it . It Works ok , but it does not last as long as the finish on a hand polished part .
For me art is individual . I do not consider any Watch that is spit out of a factory in the thousands to be art . It can be well made with a great design , but thats it . Art is when a watchmaker builds a complication caliber , these people are few and very hard to find .
There are many parts to a caliber , but if you are working on an assembly line and just polishing the same part everyday . You soon get pretty good at it . But you can still make mistakes , that is why quality control is so important to many high end brands .
Many of the people WHO write about watches live in a dream World . They believe that brands like AP or Patek carry the old watchmaking traditions in all of their watches . That is complete bullshit . The reason the old models are so coveted is because they were really handmade . I am not saying that their cheaper models like the Royal Oak or Nautilus are not well made with quite a bit of handwork in them . But they are not anywhere near art or the best the Swiss industry can offer .
Why oh why are people not honest about their watches ? I will most probably never own a truly handbuilt Watch . I do not have 5000000 kr to spend . The closest i have been is with my Lange Watch . And the silly stories i read about how AP line up the screws in the oak models . Rutine Work nothing more .
In my World AP Offshore - PP Nautilus- Rolex Sub- IWC Portuguiser etc etc are nothing more than run of the mill ordinary watches . They are sure as hell not art .
