It would be intresting to hear your views on the falling interest for high price watches in our part of the world .
Some might say that it is because of the economic climate , i believe it is something else . In recent years mechanical high price watches have enjoyed a boom period never seen before . I think this is coming to its end for several different reasons .
I think watch brands have quite simply become to greedy, and value for money is virtualy non existent . Marketing is the new god for watch brands of today who think they can sell anything . But i have news for them , they are not in the cosmetic industry . Cosmetics will always have a market , watches that cost the same as a new small car will not .
Watches have been sold mainly as status symbols and marketed as such . But there is a new wind blowing , and i for one do not think that the new generation will care quite so much about status symbols as the older generation . Nearly everthing to be said has been said and debated about watch brands in recent years . And to be honest most of what i read today about watches is boring and i have heard it a thousand times before .
Brands have increased the price of their watches while at the same time because of modern production manufactured them for less money . They have increased their service costs and given us a lousy service . In other words greed is helping them to dig their own grave . Brands are spitting out new complication watches every 5 minutes to gain our interest . I think they are doing the opposite of what they hoped to achieve . They are making what used to be exceptional into the ordinary .
Reading various watch bloggs today and looking for a honest review of a watch is like looking for a needle in a haystack . And the interest judging by the amount of people reading these blogs is falling at an alarming rate . But the watch brands will of course say this is only because we do not have the money to spend , and things will change again in the next upswing of our economy . I say bullshit to this argument . Once they have lost the interest and prestige value of their products it will be all up hill trying to get it back .
To be honest for myself i have to say i still like watches but my interest for what brands are doing is falling . And i have completly lost any respect i might have had for about 95% of the watch trade . At the same time we must see that it is an industry that must try to keep the wheels rolling and the interest rising . But i think they have shot themselves in the foot .
Any watch made today that costs less than 500.000 kr is just ordinary in the eyes of many collectors . And i think they are right .
I think the new generation will still buy a fair amount of so called prestige watches , but the golden years for mechanical watches is in my opinion over .
What do you think ?
