Rolex calibers are true inhouse calibers . And they are built for absolute reliability and strength , and easy service . Rolex do not waste money by putting glass backs on their watches or polishing the visable parts of the caliber . They concentrate on developing ways to make their watches even more reliable . Even IWC have in the last ten years copied the policy of Rolex , and have dumped polishing high finish on basic calibers . They know that spending more time on the workmanship of the caliber means better reliabilty . ETA supply not only Omega - Brietling- Tag etc etc but also thousands of other brands all over the world . They supply basic or finished calibers to all of these brands . And they have to do it at a reasonable cost . What these brands do with these calibers is up to them . But it is a fact that only a few brands get the calibers from ETA in kits and completly re- machine them before putting them together again . IWC are one of the few brands that do this . And you have to ask yourself why ?

The reason is very simple ETA calibers do not live up to the high standard of workmanship that IWC demand from their calibers . I am not saying ETA could not do the same , i am saying they do not . They make so many millions of calibers every year , that good quality for a good price is the priority here .

Brands like Rolex or IWC can concentrate on developing new ideas and put them into practice much much quicker than a mastodon like ETA . Rolex are very very conservative and carefull . Nothing absolutly nothing gets put into production before it is tested to extremes that other brands can only dream about . You might ask yourself why can they do this ? The answer is simple . Rolex are a fund they are not forced by anyone to look at their profit margin every year . Omega and most other brands have to make money every year for the Shareholders in the Swatch or Richmont groups etc etc .

It is really an unfair fight between Rolex and Omega , and one that Omega can never win . Rolex have so many advantages to start with that, it is like compairing Manchester United with Wigan .

This is not to say that Omega cannot make a watch that is comparable or even better than a Rolex model . Just look at the Speedy for an example . I think many Omega models are great value , and i personally like many of their watches . And who knows what the future can bring , reputations can be destroyed or made overnight in this world. But right now in my opinion Rolex make the strongest mechanical watch you can buy . Willy

Hej Willy.

You have missed the point completly . What Raymond Weil who are a low end brand do as got nothing to do with this discussion at all . Try reading about the way IWC recieve and rebuild out scourced calibers , before giving an opinion on them . They do not use any built outside calibers at all . What they recieve from Sellita are just pieces that they rework to IWC standard . Seiko are completly inhouse they make everything themselves from cheap basic calibers to Grand Seiko High end . In this aspect Seiko are unique in the watch world .

Nobody is saying that Inhouse is always better than out scourced calibers . I think you are using your own personal experience as a measure of what is up and down concerning watches . No body knows everything about watches . I have met many really clever watchmakers who know very little about the brands they do not work on or service . And many people who know a great deal about brands and their history but not much about the workings of a caliber . I think it is important to research something before making a statement on it Icon_e_wink We are all learning Icon_e_smile Willy
