I have read that titanium was used for the back of the case because steel was not strong enough to bear the extreme pressure on the watch case at the depth rating Rolex wanted.They did not want the watch to be any thicker so the solution was to use titanium on the back of the watch.If they had not done this the Deep Sea would be a very very thick watch indeed.A normal dive watch would just fold together under the enormous pressure.The Deep sea is no ordinary diver.To be able to go to those depths without using oil or a gas filled case and to still be a wearable watch is quite a feat.
