I am starting a brand of the week thread , were i go through the watch brands A to Z . I will just write a short introduction of each brand ,with my own opinion at the end . I hope others will contribute with pictures and their knowledge about brands . I think we could all learn something .
A . Lange & Sohne are a German watch brand that many consider to be the maker of the finest factory produced watches you can buy . Their history starts in 1815 and except for the period from 1948 to 1990 , where East Germany was under the Communists and the factory was closed , they have been making watches . The area called Glashutte is the center of the German watch industry as Geneva is to the Swiss industry . Since the release of models like the Lange 1 , Saxonia ,Tourbillon pour le Merite in 1994 , they seem to have a endless ability to make one great watch after another . The Datograph alone changed the way all the Swiss High end brands were to build for the future . Phillippe Dufour who is considered to be the greatest watch finisher alive , wears a Lange Datograph . And considers Lange to be the best finished factory built wristwatch he has ever seen .
My opinion is that Lange will achieve their ultimate goal to become the watch brand others will be measured against . It is quite a war that is going on between the Swiss high end brands and the German Brands . But Patek are really the only factory watch that can compete against Lange . The problem is that Patek who are independent do not have the fianancial power to compete against Lange in the long run . Patek still have the name and all the records for used watch sales . But Lange have been very clever , and have just concentated their efforts on building better watches . Already today in all surveys taken around the world in wealthy circles , Lange have replaced Patek as the brand with the most prestige . Some might say why compare one brand with another ? I answer , what do you think brands do ? Competition is how we and watch brands raise the bar . Willy
