My list would look something like this .
1. Rolex Oyster date changed the way all future wrist watches were made . Waterproof and shock resistent and reliable . This watch set the standard for a whole industry . No other watch in the history of watchmaking changed it like this one did .
2. Patek Calatrava set the standard for what you could call a high end wristwatch . This brand and especially this watch set a standard for finish and watchmaking for the industry .
3. Omega Speedmaster . The poor mans Rolex . A fantastic watch with a great caliber for a price never seen before in a watch of this type .
4. Seiko with their Quartz watches changed the face of the watch world , I cannot name any particular model that was more important than others . They nearly destroyed the Swiss watch industry .
5. Zenith El Primero Chronograph This watch with its 36000 vph caliber set new standards for how accurate a mechanical wrist watch could be .
6. Tag Heur Carrera Maybe the first true sports wristwatch in the world . It started a trend for making watches that had sporting connections .
7. Cartier Tank a ikon that with its square case set a trend for dress watches that exists today .
8. IWC Pilot watch . Maybe the first tool watch used by proffesionals and the general public . Brietling deserve a mention here as well . But the Pilot with its antimagnetic case was exceptional .
9. Lange & Sohne Datograph was a revolution in modern wristwatch making . Not since Zeniths El primero had anyone built a chronograph with so many new features and ideas . It sent shock waves through the Swiss high end watch brands when released . And Lange became the first watch brand to challange Pateks total dominence of high end watchmaking .
10. AP . Royal Oak . Gerald genta and AP defined the luxury sports watch with this .
This list is really just a shot in the dark . Because there are just so many watches that have been important in the history of watchmaking . So i have to be honest and say , I really do not know the top ten . I would rather call it just 10 watches out of many . Willy
