I do not know how many brands make special edition watches and name them after a military unit a film or something else, but it seems to be getting worse.I will name a few and make a personal comment.IWC Top Gun this watch has got absolutly nothing to do with the USAF flying school.JLC Navy Seal diver can you imagine a seal running around with a 60000kr watch on his wrist? Panerai Ferrari a dive brand moves into formula 1 are they serious? Omega James Bond again nothing to do with Ian Flemming or Bond who wore only Rolex. But they did sponser the film. There are more and more of this type of watches and buyers who are not watch freaks are getting conned by this advertising bullshit. If you look at the used prices of these type of watches it is easy to see that they lose more money than the normal models. For example Top Gun ceramic V normal ceramic IWC.All the Ferrari models by Panerai and GP cost less than normal models. They might fool the public but they can never fool the used watch market. That is why in my opinion these type of watches can be a good used watch buy if you intend to keep them. But i think they are a lousy investment for the future.Of course there are watches that have a genuine connection with other brands and i have not named them here. But i think most of this connection branding is not just advertising propoganda it is more telling lies to the public. But i suppose it is not so important the cosmetic industry tells thousands of lies everyday and gets away with it.Hats off to Lange and Patek amongst others for keeping their dignity .
