Not just another vintage watch
#1
On my recent trip to England i bought a watch like this one,but with an original mesh bracelet instead of leather.I am no vintage expert, but even i could see that the quality in this watch is just exceptional. When the old clockmaker opened the back of this watch,i was looking at a thing of great beauty. These watches were made completly in house by Omega craftsmen, and believe me it shows."http://www.vintage-watches-collection.com/watch/omega-watch/omega-geneve-steel-automatic-blue-dial-1968/">http://www.vintage-watches-collection.c ... dial-1968/.
My point here is that the level of watchmaking skill and handwork in a watch like this, makes most modern watches costing between 20.000dkr and 80000dkr look like huge rip offs. Now some will argue that modern watches have advanced watchmaking, because of new technical advances and materials. There is of course a lot of truth in this. But they have failed dismally in what i think is the most important criteria of all.And that is quality.
Some would argue that modern mass production methods, have lowered the price of Luxury watches.I think it has achieved the opposite. We are paying more for worse quality today.
Just compare the caliber in this old Omega to any modern caliber sitting in a watch that costs say 60000dkr.How many can you name that even get close to this quality?

No one i hope is naive enough to think that any brand who pump out tens of thousands of watches a year. Can build them by hand. But i have heard of such people Icon_e_smile There are of course a few modern brands who are going back to the old way,and actually using watchmakers to build watches. But the majority of big name brands are still turning out inferior quality for the price they are asking for their watches.
I could ask our readers this simple question to end my little story. What would you prefere to have on your wrist,if you had to choose between a product made mostly by a machine,or one made by a living breathing watchmaker?

1. Hush! We don't need further vintage collectors, the prices are constantly on the rise anyways Icon_e_wink
2. This Omega Movement - caliber 552 - is indeed excellent, and in a way "better" than later Omega movements, especially from the period early 70ies into the 90ies. However it is not really hand-crafted, although the production and assembly did certainly require more manual steps than nowadays.
3. Other than that I do fully agree, and it is the main reason, why I do stick to vintage - there is simply better value for the money. And this Omega is an example from an aftersought, big brand. Try to look at more unknown ones like Favre Leuba or Enicar (only the Sherpa-range is expensive, but You find the exact same movement quality also in their regular dress-watch collections)
4. Hvorfor skrev jeg det nu paa engelsk...
