Two of the best dive watches ever made - willy - 11-08-2014

These two watches both made by IWC are in my opinion the best dive watches of their generation . I have owned them both , and this is my own personal opinion of them.
The watches in question are the ref- 3536 aquatimer and the 3538 aquatimer . Both watches have a lot in common . The case size and workmanship on both watches is unique . They can achieve a depth rating of 2000 meter without the use of a helium valve .The design and engineering of these watches is in a class by its self . They make any sub or comex dweller of their generation pale into insignificance . Do not take my word about this , just start googling Icon_e_smile

So much as been written about these two watches , that i will not bore you with facts you can google in 5 minutes . Instead i will give you my impressions of wearing them .

The 3536 steel version is a quite heavy watch to wear , and can move around a lot on the wrist if the bracelet is not a perfect fit . In common with many other watches of this generation micro adjustment is not on this watch bracelet . The bracelet is however considered by many to be the best of its generation . The push button link adjustment is a work of genius , and the work involved in making these bracelets more than justifys the high price . And all the brands using pins and screws should look and learn from IWC on how it is done . The lume on this watch is lousy compaired to modern divers . The push down and turn bezel is a big design fault in my opinion . Others say it is a work of genius . I think it is just a dirt and sand collector like most other outside dive watch bezels . I found it stiff to turn , and i am sure that without use , in time it would be impossible to turn . The winding of this watch was smother than any other watch i have owned , including PP or Lange Icon_e_smile This i think is due to the incredible caliber building skills of IWC at this time in their history "http://people.timezone.com/library/comarticles/comarticles631681558435961807">http://people.timezone.com/library/coma ... 8435961807 . The thing i liked most about the 3536 was quite simply just looking at it . I never got tired of admiring the case and the bracelet of this watch . The polishing on the bracelet and case is just damm beautifull . But if i wanted to wear this watch as a true tool and daily watch , then i would go for the titanium model . The steel model is a scratch magnet and just to beautifull to use as a daily watch .

I now have the 3538 aquatimer in titanium . I have also owned a couple of these models in steel . The reasons why i consider this model to be the ultimate aquatimer , can be cut down to just two facts . No 1 is the fact that it has the true IWC aquatimer DNA that dates back to the original ref- 1812 . We are of course talking about the inner dive bezel . that is a IWC trademark and sets them apart from most other divers out there . No 2 is the design of the dial , it is far more readable than the 3536 , and the placement of the two crowns at 2 and 4.0.clock gives greater wear comfort than any diver with a 3.0.clock winding crown . It can be worn on a IWC rubber strap or original titanium bracelet . The watch is very light and does not move around on my wrist . I sometimes forget i am wearing it . It is made in exactly the same quality as the 3536 . The only small difference is that the caliber in the 3536 is gold plated and the 3538 uses nickle .

Both are great watches and in my opinion they are the last of the IWC dive watches , that gave something new and revolutionary in their fields . The newer Aquatimers are just pale shiny coffee bar divers compaired to these models , and poor copys of the originals . They bring nothing new at all . The development just stopped at IWC after these models . It is a pity when you consider how far ahead of the competition they were at this time .

The 3536 seems to be the darling of many watch pundits at this time , and prices are rising . But do not rule out the 3538 overtaking it , because it is really the one with the true Aquatimer DNA .

Icon_e_wink
