First impressions are not always right . - willy - 09-01-2013 Many years ago i first saw a Rolex Explorer 16570 . At that time i was a Sub or Seadweller person , and i thought the Explorer was a ugly son of a bitch watch . But i did not look closer enough at the Explorer at this time , as i should have done . In the last 10 years i have owned mostly 43-44 mm watches , and considered only 40mm and below as dress watch territory. I have bought on average 4-5 watches a year and sold them again . I like to try watches out before i judge them . I have liked many of my watches but in the end i could always find something about them that i did not like in daily use . Things like movement on the wrist - scratch prone- highly polished bracelets-crowns that dig in the back of my hand etc etc . The list is endless . Then about 2 months ago i had a meeting with Bo Hansen the King , he was wearing a black dial Explorer . And for the first time i took a closer look at this watch . I left Bo, and when i got home i began to research the history of the Explorer . After a few days and many hours on the net i decided to get this watch and try it out. Thomas Chrono had a white dial 95 model 16570 for sale at a good price , so i did a deal with him for the watch . At 40 mm it is not a big watch but it seems to wear bigger on the wrist . It is extremly comfortable to wear , indeed i forgot sometimes that i was wearing it . It kept superb time and was a easy watch to read but had a really lousy lume . And i must admit i am not into white dial watches . But the size and design of this watch was perfect for me as a daily watch , in fact better than anything i have owned so far . So i did something i have never in my life done before . I bought the same watch again in for a 2 month period . I did another deal with Thomas for a 2008 black dial 16570 with the 3186 parachrome hairspring caliber . And now i am even more pleased because i think these models are better made than the older models in many ways . The last series of Explorer models have this caliber and are without holes in the lugs and a few other improvments . Also looking at the details on this model gives me pleasure. It is also with the black dial a light catcher supreme and can easily double as a dress watch I have tried the new 42mm Explorer as well . A superbly made watch with even more improvements in the build . But it is just to heavy for my liking . So to come to the end of this story , i have to see what i have learnt from it . I have learnt never to dismiss any watch untill you take a really close look at it . Anyone else who as made the same mistake ? Willy Re: First impressions are not always right . - MortenKN - 09-01-2013 Yeah - I did that with Rolex all together when I bought my first Panerai. I always said I would never own a Rolex......Until I sold my Panerai and was on the hunt for another Panerai. A meeting with a guy wearing a Sub led me to think again - and then I had to have one. I have since had many different models and still enjoy Rolex. For me personally there is no equal in the same pricerange.... There are indeed more complicated watches with better finish, but they also come at a much higher price. WillyNo not that mistake - but I have made a mistake once - when I thought I had made a mistake, but in fact I had not, so that was a mistake - but anyway - that is one very comfortable watch - and it looks great too in my eyes - differs from the sub types and the look-a-likes. I had it but took it of and gave it to one of my boys who really wanted it - when he completede a very important task in his life - I miss it but - I love seeing it on him quite often. To him it is also the right size - it is a T-dial/hands, so it has started patinating a bit since this old photo - and will just get nicer I think ![]() br Re: First impressions are not always right . First impressions are not always right . - Auragentum - 11-01-2013 I love my 16570 with the 3186 caliber as well. We do however differ when it comes to dial color - I much prefer the white dial, but whatever floats your boat Re: First impressions are not always right . - willy - 12-01-2013 Auragentum Skrev:I love my 16570 with the 3186 caliber as well. And if they only made it with a white dial i would still be forced to have it Re: First impressions are not always right . Re: First impressions are not always right . - willy - 31-01-2013 It only took me 25 years to find that out <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> Willy Re: First impressions are not always right . Re: First impressions are not always right . |
