I think most people unless they are blind and deaf, know how well Rolex hold their
Value and make strong reliable watches.I do not think anyone here is disputing
this.So why are we getting all the usual no brainer answers?
I asked if there was real value in their watches considering the prices
being asked for them on the used market today. If you compare them with lots
of other watches for the same money or less.I named Blancpain as one example
of what you could buy for the used price of a green bezel Sub.I could name many
watches from say JLC-Glashutte etc etc where you get a much better made watch
for your money.
Some of the answers on here remind me of blind faith that things
will never change. In my eyes Rolex make good watches, and i will maybe own one
again. But to me they have become rather common, and something a lot of pack
animals like to wear to show some kind of status, just like many people who buy
Gucci or Audi cars. The image of Rolex is going to suffer in the long run,i have
no doubt about that. The image of the buyers is changing. Before it was people
who wanted a tough tool watch who bought a Rolex, today it is mostly about
impressing other people.I was issued with a Sub in the English military,so i
know that myself and others like me helped to give Rolex the image they have
today.Let us say Rolex used us in their marketing on watch sites all over the world.
The modern Rolex watches have not got much to do with these
older models. The new ones are made for people who sit behind a desk.I just
cannot imagine a modern soldier wearing a rolex into battle
I think watches from brands like Sinn or Casio etc etc, have replaced
Rolex as a tool watch quite a few years ago.So what we got left is a former tool
watch that has turned into a piece of Jewellery.Nothing wrong with that in my opinion
because that covers about 99.99 % of all the watches made today.
But i think as a piece of Jewellery Rolex do not rate very well at all.
Other brands offer better finished calibers with see through back cases for less
or the same money. In my opinion you might as well wear something that looks
good and is beautifully made rather than something that is in between.
Rolex might as well go the whole hog and start to make some
beautiful watches for a change.
Another reason to stop wearing a Rolex is that you are more likley
to get bonked on the head while out in the town, because even pondlife know what
a Rolex Sub looks like
This thread from the Rolex blogg is worth a read especially the answers from Nick Hacko
he has serviced hundreds of Rolex watches.
