Old steel datejusts are not so fine as the newer models Icon_e_wink Willy

I think every second officer you saw in the English army or navy in the old days wore a Rolex Oyster .They were THE mechanical watch that could take all the knocks you gave them.Subs were issued to some of us in those days but the Oyster was the most common watch. We could buy these watches in Hong Kong-Singapore etc to a much lower price than in England. And having served in many countries all around the world has a professionel soldier Ireland -Yeman -Malaysia -Borneo-etc etc etc I can assure you i have seen many SAS -SBS-Marines-Royal navy gunners etc wearing Oysters. But times do change and i have a few military friends in England who today wear Casio G shocks. In my time in the military we had to sign on for a minimum of 15 years thats what i call real professionel.I was 14 years and 6 months old when i signed my first contract for 13 years i was posted to my first war zone at the age of 16.Thank god this is not allowed anymore.
The one that got away!!'

Hi Subman,I think why they sold so many Rolex watches to the British Military was because in the sixtys and seventys when serving abroard they were so easy to buy.The traders used to come into the barracks or onboard the ships and you could buy a Rolex and pay for it with a credit contract that was agreed with the Military. They just took the monthly payement out of our wages and we got the watch straight away.As you know the Oyster was the most famous Rolex and the first Water proof 100 meter watch.Especialy when it became the first wrist watch to cross the English Channel on the wrist of the channel swimmer Mercedes. This watch was the one that made Rolex a household name in the world for making bomb proof watches.Of course the Oyster of today has become more of a dress watch but so has the Sub in my opinion. But it is the simple steel Oyster that made Rolex what they are today and that is why it has a place in my heart Icon_e_wink Can i ask you what you are up to now are you still connected to the military or is that a bad question? Have a nice day.

Icon_e_wink
