I think watchmaking has changed over recent years.In the old days there were a few brands who could make watches with superb finish to the cases and bracelets.Today because of modern CT machines the difference between a watch that costs 50000 and one that costs 10000 is minimal.And there are thousands of brands who now can make watches of a very good standard.I still think most of the top brands use a little more time and effort on the finish ie.polishing of the case and bracelet.And this costs time and money.For me it is what is inside the watch that i would pay more for.But that is only because i know a little bit about watches.For the average watch buyer i do not think it is so important.The ETA caliber in a cheaper watch will work just as well as the caliber in a Patek and be a lot easier and cheaper to own.I think you can divide watch buyers into two main catergories those who buy watches because of the name of the brand and the signal it sends to other people.And others who buy a watch on its merits alone.I think 99% of people who buy a Rolex do so because of the image this brand gives them in the eyes of others.But we watch freaks are different we judge watches in a completley different way.It is a bit like the way a mechanic judges a car when you know more about the insides of the beast your judgment changes.That i think is why we are a little harder in our criticism of watches and we should be.The price of a watch as also got prestige in the eyes of most just like in cars.I for one do not buy a watch just because of the brand or their history.But i know that if i want something a little special with some handwork skill involved i will find it hard to get in the cheaper brands.But i hate watch snobs who look down on cheap brands because many cheap brands make very very good watches.
