You are indeed correct, maybe it is difficult to compare "larger" brands with independent watchmakers, hence why I opted for the discussion of a "Top 5".... in the sense that one needs to discuss which criteria are looked upon when making a Top 5!

I, for one, believes that where many of the older brands where once the leaders in innovation, new patents and complication, a lot has happened and in my opinion only JLC, AL&S and maybe to some extend AP (on their Jules Audemars models) are still up there, and the table has turned - it is now the smaller brands being innovative and thinking out of the box to change the realms of watchmaking... not just beating around the bush and introducing yet another tourbillon or perpetual calendar in precious metal.

Innovation and product development has many sizes and definitions, but my overall impression is that the "regular" Top 5 are long lost in comparison to the independent ones...
